Camp Kinhaven is an extension of Kinhaven School, a parent-governed independent preschool located in the heart of Arlington’s Ballston-Virginia Square neighborhood, combining the staff, environment, and philosophy of Kinhaven School with a healthy dose of good old-fashioned summertime fun!
Kinhaven's summer day camp serves children ages 2 1/2 - 5 years old. It will run from June 18 through August 17, 2018, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The program is held Monday through Friday each week.
We will hold three different sessions. Each session at Camp Kinhaven features a theme around which age-appropriate experiences are planned, both outdoors and in the various learning centers of the classroom. The session dates and themes are: Into the Woods Session I; June 18 - July 6 (No camp on July 4) Beginning your summer with a stay-cation? Give your child a trip Into the Woods. We shall nurture an appreciation of forests as we meet woodland creatures, plant and care for trees, and trace the origins of many everyday products. Beginning carpentry, wood (glue) constructions, paper making, seed art, and jam-making are a few of the “tree-ts” of the first session of Camp Kinhaven.
Water, Water Everywhere Session II; July 9- July 27 For many summer isn’t the same without water sports such as swimming, boating, or fishing. Explore water and waterways, the plants and animals within it, and the variety of ways humans interact with water. Campers will follow the water cycle from raindrop to waterway to the tap. Session II will be a gusher; students are sure to leave with an increased awareness of this valued resource.
City Safari Session III, July 30- August 17 Session III offers a closer look at the inner workings of local services such as public safety, trash and recycling, health, and public libraries as our classrooms are transformed and children take on new roles for those visiting from other classes. Join us on our City Safari.
Afternoon Adventures Children 3 - 5 years can add an extra dose of fun extending each day until 1:55pm. Summer Afternoon Adventures offer a mini-theme packed with hands-on activities centered around classic children’s books and authors. $225/session
Session I: Sensory Seuss (no camp July 4) Dr. Seuss is on the loose at Kinhaven! Campers will investigate Seuss-science through their senses as they breathe in the scents wafting from their newly planted truffula trees; savor the feeling of ooey gooey oobleck running through fingers; taste the results of Kinhaven’s own butter battle; and see sights more exotic than those on Mulberry St during our character parade and dance party.
Session II: Storybook Cooking Campers will dig into tasty tales this summer! From baking the treats in Laura Numeroff’s If You Give a… series to chopping nutritious delicious Growing Vegetable Soup or stirring up Harold and the Purple Crayon smoothies, campers will gain cooking skills, practice with sequencing, measuring, and teamwork, and a positive attitude toward new foods.
Session III: Potion Lab Calling young scientists and mess-makers for a session of kitchen alchemy with potions, brews, and concoctions of all kinds. From suspensions to slime to smoke, campers will combine common ingredients to discover the wonders of chemistry.

Daily Activities Class Meetings: provide the framework for the day as children and teachers greet one another- often in song, discuss the topic of the day, and choose a primary area of work for the morning.
Work Time: encompasses a protracted period of play including individual and small group play devised by children as well as thematically relevant experiences designed by the teachers for small groups of children.
Meals: Children and teachers share a morning snack provided by Kinhaven. Each child brings a lunch from home. (Please be aware that refrigeration of lunches is not generally available.)
Outdoor Time: Each class will spend at least 30 minutes per day in a neighborhood playground, weather permitting. Utilizing local resources, nearly every classroom experience can be conducted outdoors, Playground play, group games, connections to nature, painting, building, gardening, and bubbles are among the limitless possibilities. In case of inclement weather, gross motor activities will be conducted in the first floor Parish Hall. Maury Park, located behind the Arlington Arts Center at the corner of Monroe and 8th St is our primary outdoor play space. Children and teachers will walk to and from Maury Park. Occasional visits to Oakland and Quincy Parks may be held without notice.
Support Teachers: Kinhaven’s Support Teacher visits each classroom each day during work time to provide valuable support to the teaching team and children by decreasing the student-teacher ratio through small group activities and enrichment experiences.
