Camp Kinhaven is an extension of Kinhaven School, a parent-governed independent preschool located in the heart of Arlington’s Ballston-Virginia Square neighborhood, combining the staff, environment, and philosophy of Kinhaven School with a healthy dose of good old-fashioned summertime fun! Each session at Camp Kinhaven features a theme around which age-appropriate experiences are planned, both outdoors and in the various learning centers of the classroom.
Summer camp will look different in 2020 given protocols to reduce COVID-19 exposure. Mindful of the wide variety of family approaches and circumstances, there are three entry points to Camp Kinhaven:
CAMP KITS (sessions 1,2,3) in which families pick-up a contact-less materials bag brimming with the supplies and printed activity guide needed for an adult at home to implement asynchronous learning on our summer camp themes. $175.00 per session
VIRTUAL CAMP (sessions 1, 2, 3) expands upon the success of Kinhaven’s remote teaching and learning experience of the spring. Teachers provide both a daily synchronous class meeting and small group activity conducted by video-conference with materials. The Camp Kit is offered as an asynchronous companion. Families provide internet access and hardware for access to Virtual Camp meetings. $450.00 per session
LIVE CAMP (available Sessions 2 and 3 only) will bring children and teachers back together at school for camp classes for fun and friendship. Summer affords the opportunity to program a significant portion of the day outdoors which adds to our comfort in resuming in-person classroom operations. Nevertheless, daily activities ranging from arrival/dismissal routines, temperature and symptom checks, group sizes, wearing of masks or equivalent face coverings, and cleaning protocols are among the many facets of life at school that are modified to elevate health and safety from an underlying assumption to the prevailing preoccupation for staff and families. Kinhaven's live summer day camp serves children ages 21/2- 5 years, July 6 through August 14, 2020, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, or 9:00am - 3:00pm. The program is held Monday through Friday each week. $1050.00 per session ages 3-5; $1,125 under 3 years
Camp Kinhaven's themes are consistent across the three camp styles. Each session at Camp Kinhaven features a theme around which age-appropriate experiences are planned, both outdoors and in the various learning centers of the classroom. The session dates and themes are: Construction Junction Session I; June 15 - July 2, 2020 (No camp on July 3) Put on your hard hat to enter the construction zone. With traditional building materials, re-purposed supplies, and confectionery creations campers will design marshmallow buildings, gum drop domes, paper tube castles and towering skyscrapers.
Down on the Farm Session II; July 6- July 24, 2020 Summertime is the right time to go down on the farm. Making butter, growing sprouts, and practicing animal care will be highpoints of your child’s session, which culminates with a visit from Old McDonald and his farm animals.
Going Buggy Session III, July 27- August 14, 2020 Get ready for some creepy crawly fun as we get to know the six and eight-legged creatures in our neighborhoods and beyond. From science to storybooks to the stage we’ll salute insects and arachnids for their pollinating prowess, and examine their unique body structures and amazing adaptations.
Afternoon Adventures Children can add an extra dose of fun, extending each day until 3:00pm. Summer Afternoon Adventures offer a mini-theme packed with hands-on activities centered around classic children’s books and authors. The afternoon includes activity, a brief rest, snack, and play.

Daily Activities Class Meetings: provide the framework for the day as children and teachers greet one another- often in song, discuss the topic of the day, and choose a primary area of work for the morning.
Work Time: encompasses a protracted period of play including individual and small group play devised by children as well as thematically relevant experiences designed by the teachers for small groups of children.
Meals: Children and teachers share a morning snack provided by Kinhaven. Each child brings a lunch from home. (Please be aware that refrigeration of lunches is not generally available.)
Outdoor Time: Each class will spend at least 30 minutes per day in a neighborhood playground, weather permitting. Utilizing local resources, nearly every classroom experience can be conducted outdoors, Playground play, group games, connections to nature, painting, building, gardening, and bubbles are among the limitless possibilities. In case of inclement weather, gross motor activities will be conducted in the first floor Parish Hall. The onsite courtyard and Maury Park, located behind the Arlington Arts Center at the corner of Monroe and 8th St are our primary outdoor play spaces. Children and teachers will walk to and from Maury Park. Occasional visits to Oakland and Quincy Parks may be held without notice.
Resource Teachers: Kinhaven’s Support Teacher visits each classroom each day during work time to provide valuable support to the teaching team and children by decreasing the student-teacher ratio through small group activities and enrichment experiences.
